Eyebrow Microblading: To Do or Not to Do?

That is the question. Isn’t it?! I feel as though there are so many people getting microblading done, and if you aren’t one of those people, you’re probably curious about it and considering getting it done … just like I was. Am I right?! Well, I thought it would be helpful to share my experience with you today in case you are sitting on the fence like I was, or if you’re just curious about the whole thing!!

I have always been one to fill my eyebrows in so, of course, I was immediately curious about eyebrow microblading when I heard about it but I was definitely SKEPTICAL!! I remember talking to Kaitlin about it and she put me in touch with Shaughnessy (AKA the Eyebrow Guru!!). Hell, if Kaitlin trusted her with my eyebrows, I knew I was in good hands and when it comes down to it, I am one of those people who will pretty much give anything a shot. So I went ahead and booked an appointment for myslef … and MY MOM!!

Honestly, I was a bit nervous going in to get them done and I’m not one to be scared of needles by any means!! I just wasn’t sure what it was going to be like and if it was going to be painful or not! Thankfully, my experience was pain-free!! However, I HAVE heard that some people find it painful but I think that probably depends on a few factors, such as who does it for you and your pain tolerance, etc. But they do use a numbing cream on your eyebrows prior to the microblading so that definitely helps manage the pain!

After getting my eyebrows done I noticed that they were pretty dark in colour, however, I learned that that’s totally NORMAL and the actual colour of your brows lighten as they heal! I think it was around the one or two-week mark post microblading that my brows showed their true colour.

I absolutely love the shape and the colour of my brows and it’s been about a year or two and I’ve only had one touchup! Being that the colour is semi-permanent it will fade over time and refresher appointments are recommended every 1-2 years. Which is kind of a bummer if you love how your brows look once they’re healed up but you gotta get them in order to keep your brows looking beautiful!! I tend to exfoliate my face quite often too so I probably needed a touch up quicker than those who don’t exfoliate as much as I do but I have to wait until after I have this baby … and when I find some extra TIME to go in for my refresher!!

In the meantime, I’ve been filling my eyebrows in until I can get back in to see Shaughnessy! The Brow Wiz by Anastasia Beverley Hills in Medium Brown is my favourite (and it’s cruelty-free!), Kaitlin also uses this brow pencil on me when she does my makeup! When I fill in my eyebrows on my own, I tend to go way lighter than when Kaitlin does them for me. I’ve gone ahead and included some before and after photos for you below along with a couple of snaps from when Kaitlin has done them for me so you can see the difference!

So, to wrap this up, I would give two solid thumbs up to eyebrow microblading. I love the fact that you are able to get brows that are perfectly shaped and coloured to your liking. It’s so nice to not have to touch up your brows every day with an eyebrow pencil (especially if you stay on top of your refreshers!!). However, if you are considering getting this done I would make SURE to do your research!! Find the best microblader to go to in your area, ask around, search out their google reviews … check out their website and Instagram pages!! You want to go with someone that is amazing at what they do and someone you can trust to get the best results!!

Also, make sure to follow the healing requirements after getting your brows done … don’t pick at your brows, some brows will scab and I have seen people pick at them and then that results in gaps in their brows … you want to treat these babies well so they look the best they can!!

I would 100% get (and will be) getting them done again … in fact, I know a ton of people who have had this done and they love their results, both Kaitlin and Mackenzie, and even my mom, have had it done and so far everyone loves it!!

I hope this helps if you’ve been curious about it yourself … if you have any questions, write them down in the comments section and I’ll try my best to answer them for you!!

xo

  1. I’m a microblading artist and there’s a couple things I should state when looking for an artist. Not all use a numbing cream (yikes!) so make sure to ask if they do! I’ve done a lot of touch ups on other people’s work, and even though their work was great, the artists either weren’t sanitary or didn’t give the client options. A professional microblading artist should go over shape options with you, as well as color options. It is your face after all. ??‍♀️ They should be wearing gloves at all times and either using disposable products or have an autoclave for cleaning metal tools. If you go into an appointment, and these things aren’t happening, you can walk out and leave! Just because you are there does not mean you need to go through with the appointment! 🙂

    1. I can attest they do all these things at Studio Sashiko being a past client. I love my brows! Best decision ever and bonus, I can sleep in longer.

    2. Jess would you mind providing your info? I’ve been researching microblading artists as I desperately need and want to get my brows done. You clearly know what you’re talking about. Are you in the Lower Mainland?

  2. I’ve always been curious about this. I’m very fair and get mine shaped and tinted. But I hate how dark the tint is initially and then how quickly they fade. Perhaps this is a better option!

    1. I just can’t do it, I find the colour fades all the same tint. And the “hair” lines bleed into one another After time. I don’t no if it’s just the job or what but I can spot a washed out micro blade brow right away and to me it all ends up looking like faded tatood eyebrows. 🙁

    2. So, what is microblading? I read the article twice to figure it out but couldn’t find where it mentions what it actually is. Blading makes me think of something being cut but you mention a needle. ??? I am curious of the process. Please explain. Thanks.

  3. Hi Jill,

I’ve been sitting on the fence for about two years now; whether or not to get mine done. My biggest concern is if the ink/fine lines will bleed, kind of like how a tattoo does over time. Did you find this happened to you?

Thanks for sharing. Your posts are alway so helpful!

  4. I’ve been so curious about microblading as well! I fill in my eyebrows due to them being so sparse and light, and I would love a more permanent option! I’m sure it varies a bit, but I’m curious as to how much it typically costs??
    Thanks!! ♥️

  5. Hey! Love this post. What if you decide to get it done, and then hate it and never want to do it again. Do you know of any long term affects? Scaring? Faded disclosured lines?

    Thank you 🙂

  6. I’ve heard that continued microblading can result in scarring and loss of the natural hair due to damage of the hair follicle – is this true?

  7. I just got my brow microbladed and I hate them. I’m nervous to go back for my touch up in four weeks for fear that they will end up even worse. What do you recommend? Cancelling my touchup and letting them fade out or go back and ask for them to be tweaked?

  8. Hi thank u so much for ur post about microblading. Someone once mentioned to me that over time when u get the touch ups becuz they may not be able to go exactly in the same spot that it starts to look like ur eyebrows have a smudge – i don’t kno if this makes sense but i wondered if u had heard this.

  9. Thanks Jillian great info I am 55 and been on the fence to get the brows done and nervous. My daughter had hers done I went with her and it looks amazing. I am feeling more confident after reading your blog and that your mom got her done.

  10. I also had my eyebrows microbladed last summer after I saw your result. They did one layor without numbing cream and the second with. The first was therefore very painful! But I got through it and I love love love the result. I was stupid enough to over pluck my brows as a teenager and they never fully grew back. So this was the perfect way for me to get fuller brows. I never wanted to tattoo my brows cause that seams too drastical but microblading is amazing and I would absolutely recommend it to everyone 🙂

  11. Amber at SocialBrows and Lashes in Kamloops is AMAZING! Being and esthetician for years before switching to microblading allowed her to perfect her brow shaping skills first. Being an esthetician myself I think this is really important, too many people think this is a way to make good money without spending enough time ( if any ) in the beauty industry and just don’t have enough training. Amber is incredibly professional, completely sanitary and spends so much time discussing your shape and measuring out your brows it’s failproof. She is truely a brow guru!

  12. What about the long term effects? Blading your face. Does that leave any scaring after repeat blading? What happens to your eyebrows when you are 80 and decide not to do them anymore ?

  13. What is the cost and where is she located. I’m near Hamilton Ontario if she’s not anywhere near that can you recommend someone else

  14. My eyebrows are so light it looks like I don’t have any. I went and had microblading done and it was the best thing. I now have eyebrows and it changed how my face looked. Best money spent!

  15. I got my eyebrows done a year and a half ago and absolutely love them. I had numbing cream and would describe the feeling as being scratched with a toothpick. I’m looking forward to my next touch-up to get that darker look back again! Definitely worth it!

  16. My sister had her’s done and they looked great for about a year, then they turned orange so she had to go in and have them fixed. She’s blonde so I’m not sure what happened. It kind of scared me off of having them done. But your’s look so nice, and I go to visit my family every summer in Langley!

  17. I love my microblading and I can`t believe that people have lived without it. I had it in Singapore last year and probably at the end of this one I am going to get iterance. Perfect shape and colour is something that almost half women don`t have and try to achieve every morning with eyebrow pencils and eyeshadows. So, yes, microblading is a blessing.

  18. Thanks so much for this blog!I have been on the fence about microbladding for a awhile, my brows are so light they are nonexistence have to pencil them in everyday. I live in Kamloops and is having a hard time finding someone in the Okanagan would prefer not to travel to the coast… Any recommendations locally? Thanks so much:)

    Natalie

  19. I’ve been so curious about microblading as well! I fill in my eyebrows due to them being so sparse and light, and I would love a more permanent option! I’m sure it varies a bit, but I’m curious as to how much it typically costs??
    Thanks!! ♥️

  20. I am doing my research now and I am looking for someone in the Kelowna or West Kelowna area, I have next to no brows and I am tired of trying to make them, so much work would be needed. I would very glad for the shop to do before and after photos to help others who are in the same boat. Any advise anyone would have is grateful. Thanks!!

  21. Hey Jill, been thinking of microbladding for some time now. I don’t wear make up and would like to look a bit more polished. Once you are past the healing, what is the regime for mantaining? Do you pluck around the lines of the microbladding?

  22. Hi! I just got my eyebrows done for the first time (I’ve been staring at yours for so long I needed my own!). Question though, how do you wash your face/shower for the first two weeks? I’m hoping you can give me your tips!

    Thank you!

  23. I think if a girl need to improve the shape of eye brow; so microblading is the best choice. One of my friend did this because the shape and quantity of her eyebrows was not enough. She look leave for some days from the office; and when she came back all staff really shock by the beautiful eyebrows of her; then she told me about microbleding. and semi permanent makeup. I like this post, thanks for sharing this with us. I recomend this procedure to everyone but always appoint by the best dermatogist. thanks
