5 Tips for Selecting Your Perfect One-Piece Swimsuit

Ever since having Leo I’ve been a bit more self-conscious of my tummy, Justin always tells me I look great and that I look awesome in a bikini and I KNOW this is all just in my head (funny how we all do this to ourselves, right?!) but for now I feel sooo much more comfortable in a one piece! Maybe until I start hitting the gym again (I’m not on much of a workout routine currently) but until then I think I’ll be rocking one-piece’s because they make me feel so much sexier and I also feel most comfortable chasing Leo around when I’m in my one-piece, as I feel like I don’t have to constantly be checking my suit, pulling up my bottoms or making sure my love handles are tucked away, these babies suck it all in for you, and keep it ALL in place, where it should be!! LOL!  So this mama couldn’t be MORE excited that one-piece swimsuits are IN!!

At first I thought I was making a total “mom decision” when deciding to purchase and wear more one-piece suits but lately, so many Influencers (like Happily Grey and Sincerely Jules, for example) have been rocking more and more one-piece swimsuits which make me feel EVEN better about them and reinforces the fact that I’m actually in STYLE! LOL!!! And, not only are they in style BUT they’re SEXY and they provide lots of coverage to make you feel comfy when lounging by the pool on vacay, sipping on margs and chowing down on veggie tacos!! Hell, you can even chow down on MORE veggie tacos in these babies as your stomach is tucked away out of site!! Hell ya!!!

Speaking of comfy and sexy suits … how much do you love this cute and playful suit from Modcloth?! I love the fact that it’s so different from the rest of my swimsuits with its nautical look and I LOVE the collar and plunging neck and back!! Below I’m going to share some of my current favourite swimsuits from Modcloth along with 5 tips for selecting YOUR perfect swimsuit!!

Tips

1. Go for Dark and Patterened Suits

I find that dark coloured and patterned swimsuits are the most flattering, they help disguise the lumps and bumps and the little love handles while solid light coloured swimsuits tend to show more imperfections … including the dreaded CAMELTOE!! LOL!!

2. Treat It Like an Investment

I don’t feel guilty spending more money on a swimsuit because typically that means the quality is much better, the fabric will be thicker, and it won’t lose shape or bag out in areas you don’t want it to bag!! You’re more than likely to have a good quality swimsuit for a long time so it’s best to find one that checks all of these boxes so you’re happy with it for years!

3. Size Up

If you’re purchasing your swimsuit from Modcloth, I would suggest sizing up! So far I’ve had really great luck with Modcloth‘s full pieces suits but I do find they fit a bit small, I have around 3 or 4 suits from them and I’m happy with every single one of them. However, the last time I ordered, I ordered 4 suits and only one ended up fitting me. Also, Modcloth has a ton of plus size bathing suits and suits that also have an underwire so there are a bunch of different options for different body sizes which is so nice!!

4. Hit Up the Underwire

That’s right, as I mentioned above, I know many of you out there need a little extra support for the girls so make sure to go for a suit that has an underwire built right in, that way the girls will be in control and you’ll feel wayyy more comfortable!!

5. Have Fun with It

Don’t be afraid to go for bold colours or patterns (as long as you feel good in it and that camel toe is in hiding!), it’s fun to find swimsuits that are a bit of a statement and that are also cute, classic, timeless and SEXY!!

  1. Just turned 50 this year ! Have used a bikini for years but on my deck sunning lol. Decided this year to go to a one piece- they are really gorgeous! Have ordered one form La Vie en Rose- here is to hopefully a good start lol.

  2. Super pumped one pieces are in style right now – I’ll be about 4 months postpartum this summer (5 weeks to go baby!) So I’m happy I’ll be able to hide some things 🙂

  3. I LOVE this swimsuit! It’s so cute and mom-friendly. I’ve been so happy to see more influencers promoting one-pieces too (as I’m also a new mom and body conscious!). Thanks for sharing 🙂

    1. Thanks so much for sharing!! I’m in need of a new bathing suit. I’m currently 4 month post partum and it makes me soo excited to know full peice bathing suits are actually in!!! 🙂

  4. I absolutely love one pieces! I am also a mother and I find myself gravitating towards One pieces. Can you please tell me what size you are wearing? I always have problems knowing what size to order online. Thank you!

  5. Hi Jillian!! I love this swimsuit and I am heading to Hawaii soon and would love to purchase this one. I am always hesitant to order online but I would consider myself the same size as you so can you share what size you ordered. Thanks a bunch

  6. I love all your suits jill! Can u recommend any company with more support for the girls as well as a larger size like 12? I have such a hard timing finding suits to hold them up and don’t look old laddish! Th, kerri, Mom of two

    1. I’m loving these plunging one pieces! They’re a great middle ground for some sex appeal while rocking the Mom bod (that I’m totally proud of!) Thanks for these great ideas for this Seattle mama of 3!

  7. Yes yes yes!!! After baby, one-pieces are key! I feel so much more comfortable moving around with one on and more confident.

  8. Thanks for sharing. I find swimsuits and jeans the hardest things to shop for post kids (I have 3)!!! My body has changed so much and even though people say it’s all in my head, I look fine in a bikini, I just want to be comfortable and feel great. Thanks for posting. I can’t wait to go, one – piece shopping! Maybe you can do a jeans blog next 🙂

  9. I enjoy one piece but at times I find that our boobs sag unless it’s my impression lol. But my tummy is flatter ?

  10. You look great in anything. I am 7 months postpartum and still not feeling all that comfortable in one piece. Thanks for sharing. love your posts and your IG stories.

  11. My friend and I were just talking about how happy we are that one pieces are back in style. I’ve always felt better in a once piece but was embarrassed when I was the only one wearing one, it made me feel more self conscious! I feel so much better know they are cool haha! You look stunning in that suit! I also love your solid and stripes ones! Xo

  12. Jillian!! You’re the cutest and I’m also thinking one pieces need to happen here too! I’m a bit taller and was just curious if you’d think the modcloth ones would be good for longer torsos?? I also love that you address the camel toe issue! Darn light coloured bathing suits ?

  13. I had a baby 9 months ago and I can so relate to this post ?. I bought mine from everything but water although mod cloth seems to have better collection and cheaper.

  14. Can I ask you which of your suits is your all time favourite? I love the floral Zinnia suit from Anthropology that you wore as well as the blue striped suit. Which of those were the most comfortable?

Btw, Erin Ireland is my husband’s niece and I know you are good friends. 🙂

  15. Yes I’m on board with one piece suits! They hide anything you need them to hide and also being a momma of one the belly skin just isn’t the same!

  16. Am finally on board with the one piece look! I was a swimmer so I protested the one piece for a while because I had to wear them back in the day. But these are so much cuter than the one pieces we used to see! Definitely will be investing in a good one piece and LOVED the black and white with ruffles your friend was wearing in an Instagram story. I’d be grateful if you could link it 🙂

  17. I love one pieces. So glad they are in style so there are a lot more cute ones to choose from. Years ago it was near impossible to find ones I liked. I hope they stay in style for a long time!

  18. Not a mom yet but am in LOVE that one pieces are back in style. Something about flaunting a tiny bikini around my inlaws and elders that makes me uncomfortable. Now to find one I love!

  19. Did you try going in the water with this suit? Am wondering if “the girls” move around and can easily pop out when in the water or if the shoulders slide off? 🙂

  20. It caught my attention when you talked about how suits of a darker color and with interesting patterns are a good way to cover up any small imperfections we may be worried about. My husband is taking me on a trip for our anniversary next month, so I need to buy some women’s sun protective swimwear to use on the beach. Keeping your tips in mind should help me find swimwear I can feel confident in!
