My IKEA Sektion Kitchen!!!

When designing my kitchen the first thing that I think about is functionality. I want my kitchen to be family friendly, party friendly and obviously cooking friendly!!! SO I am going to take you on a tour of my new Ikea Sektion Kitchen!!! This kitchen has my name written all over it from every little detail…the colour of the cabinets, the hard wear and definitely the countertops!!! It’s romantic, flirty, feminine, classic, but it still can host a FUN party…which of course I love!!

I decided to put some of my cabinets directly on the countertop like you would have seen hundreds of years ago in an old European home…I love this idea mainly because it allows you to go up higher and there is no wasted space for storage!!! These cabinets make a perfect appliance garage or easy access for every day items. It lowers your shelving making everything eye level and easy to reach for everyone!!! Underneath I chose to do two single shallow drawers instead of one giant drawer so that everything is more organized and easier to find. One thing in my kitchen that is not going anywhere is my lazy susan…which I call the lazy Jillian!!! It makes everything so much easier to put everything away and take out. One of my favourite features in my kitchen is the Ikea farmhouse sink. I use these as much as possible in all of my projects. They are homey and give the feeling of memories and a nod to the past. This feature instantly transform my kitchen into a happy space from morning to night. It can easily be prepared for any party, that’s why my kitchen has a specific party closet!!!! Just wait until you see my wine storage…..what’s good food without good wine!?!?

One of the main features that I LOVE about my Ikea Sektion kitchen is the drawers inside drawers. I used to find ways to section of my cupboards and drawers by using tupperwear containers or other storage containers to create sections for storing things. NOW the Ikea Sektion Kitchen comes with the sections built right in, they are removable and adjustable so you can change them around as much as you want!!! This makes it easy to store your dishes in drawers so that no reaching or looking is necessary! I’ve even included a pull out rawer under the sink for my garbage and recycling so that it’s easier to access everything at the back. I am a HUGE believer in doing ALL drawers NOT doors in your kitchen. This makes organization so simple and easy to access every item in the cupboard simply by pulling it out.

Your kitchen looks wonderful! Question about the cabinets that sit on the counter. Since they’re full overlay and frameless, was there enough clearance for the door to swing over the countertop or did you have to raise them a little? It looks to me like the box is sitting right on the countertop and you maybe just used the little bit of wiggle room in the adjustable hinges.

This is a beautiful kitchen but a word of warning – Ikea has huge supply issues with this kitchen. We ordered at the start of March and we are STILL waiting today (June 12th) for half the drawer and door fronts to be available and have now been informed it will be at least another month). Please look at the posts by others on their Facebook page at all the problems people are having with their kitchens before you order.

    June 16th, 2015 at 5:28 am

I also see that there is a Domsjo double-bowl farmhouse sink shown. IKEA is having a problem keeping that in stock, as well. I planned my base sink cabinet specifically with this sink in mind, but when I ordered everything, the sink was “backordered”, or so I thought. Now I can’t find one anywhere, and their distribution warehouse isn’t even stocking it… Frustrated…

Hi there, we are considering ordering this right now. A question if you don’t mind. Where are you located? And did you install the part of the kitchen that was ready and are now just waiting on the final pieces?

  29. CPW Austin

    June 22nd, 2015 at 6:45 pm

I’m in Texas but the shortage is US wide (we have family and friends around the country checking their local store for the smaller fronts for us). We are about to install next week (mostly because we can’t put off our trades any longer and we have appliances we need to get installed to make sure they work before we can no longer return them). We only have fronts (drawers and doors) for about half the cabinets so the rest will basically be unusable until the missing parts are back in stock (as of today that’s July for some, no known date for others). Overall we have waited 4+ months now. The quality is great but if you can, I’d hold off longer until they sort out the supply issues or you have a large garage to store it all until you have enough to install.

    June 23rd, 2015 at 8:39 am

Thanks for sharing some insight, this is definitely something to consider before we order. Or, perhaps, knowing this, we could choose the cabinets we order accordingly and avoid (where possible) the out of stock options. I am located in Toronto, but I hear from others that the situation isn’t any different north of the border. Good luck with the install, I hope the rest of the cabinets arrive soon!

Do you still recommend IKEA kitchen cabinets?

  42. Melanie McKenzie

    February 13th, 2017 at 8:33 am

Hi Jillian, wondered if you would still recommend Ikea for a primary kitchen space… have been reading a lot of poor reviews, particularly with foil vs. solid wood cabinets… ? Particularly around areas like the dishwasher, sink and oven areas… Love to know what your experience has been as we are about to renovate and you can beat the value.

Hi Jillian. I need some DESIGN 911 HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know this is an old post, but I have a very big question. I need to figure out finishings for my Ikea cabinets – one being the toe kicks. I cannot get a nice enough joint on the outer toe kicks. Seriously.. For your month off if you want to come to my house in Revelstoke with your little family and help me. I also need help with my stair treads :'( HELP!!

    January 24th, 2018 at 1:47 pm

Hi Jill! Absolutely love this kitchen. Can you tell me if the base cabinets are the Bodbyn off white that are currently in stock in Ikea? I am not sure if these were also available back in 2015? I feel like the current Bodbyn cabinets have a slight yellow tint and not sure how they would look with a white counterop. Thanks!

I’m desperately trying to find a backsplash tile like this! I have the off white ikea cabinets and am struggling so much with backsplash. I love this and would buy it immediately! You said World Mosaic Tile but I still cannot find it. Is there a color or dealer you got it from?

    Thank you!

Whatever you do with an IKEA kitchen. It still looks IKEA kitchen. You might want to consider refacing with custom doors the next time.

Ikea kitchen fronts are awful but I like the construction. I’m buying the frame but using semi handmade for the fronts. More options for colours and styles than Ikea.

Beautiful kitchen! Do you mind linking the spice jars you used? I’m hoping to find glass jars that have flip top lids that fit in the variera spice drawer insert, but in case I don’t…
